A Backdrop alternative, if you'd rather have stills that change

These are two good apps with different ideas. Backdrop plays 4K video on your desktop and, uniquely, on your Lock Screen. Chronoscape shows still scenes and changes which version you see based on the real light and weather outside. One moves, the other matches the weather. Pick by taste.
If you want video, buy Backdrop. Chronoscape has no video, no animation, and cannot touch the Lock Screen. Cindori's app is well made and does things we don't. Read on only if the appeal of a changing desktop, for you, isn't about movement.

Where Backdrop is the better app
- Video, obviously. If you want motion on your desktop, nothing in Chronoscape competes. It isn't a weaker version of that feature; it simply doesn't have it.
- The Lock Screen. Backdrop was the first app to put custom video there, and it's genuinely clever. macOS gives ordinary apps no supported way to do it, so we can't follow.
- A community library and an editor. Thousands of backdrops made by other people, and you can make your own. Chronoscape gives you what we've curated and nothing else.
- You can buy it once. €29.99 lifetime, no subscription, and the trial has no time limit, so you can live with it watermarked before deciding.
- It's more established. Chronoscape just launched.
Where Chronoscape differs
It matches the weather instead of moving
A video wallpaper is the same loop at 8am and 11pm. A Chronoscape scene isn't: it reads your real sunrise and sunset, and the weather where you are, and shows the version of the place that matches. Foggy morning, foggy desktop. It's a subtler effect than video, and easier to keep looking at all day.
Nothing is playing
Backdrop's sub-0.3% CPU figure is genuinely good for video playback. Chronoscape's equivalent is that there is no playback: a still image sits on the desktop, and the app does something only when the light or weather actually changes. We haven't published measured numbers, so we won't claim a head-to-head win.
Quiet by design
Menu bar, an optional Dock icon, no library to browse for an hour. It picks the right scene and leaves you alone. Some people want a desktop that performs; this one is for people who want a desktop that agrees with the window.
So which one
Backdrop if you want motion, a Lock Screen that moves, a big community library, something to tinker with, or a more established app.
Chronoscape if you want the desktop to track the actual hour and weather, and you'd rather it were still.

- Can Chronoscape change my Lock Screen like Backdrop can?
- No. Backdrop was the first app to put custom video on the macOS Lock Screen, and that remains something Chronoscape cannot do, since it sets the desktop wallpaper only. If the Lock Screen matters to you, Backdrop is the app that does it.
- Which one is lighter on battery?
- Backdrop publishes a figure of under 0.3% CPU on a MacBook Pro, which is impressive for video playback. Chronoscape does no continuous playback at all, and swaps a still image when the light or weather changes and otherwise sits idle in the menu bar. In principle that is the lighter approach, but we have not published measured numbers and will not claim a comparison we have not made.
- Does Backdrop follow the weather?
- No. Backdrop has playlists with scheduling and shuffle, so you can rotate backdrops on a timetable, but it does not tie the wallpaper to your local sunrise and sunset or to current weather conditions. That is the specific thing Chronoscape does.
